James Gunn, director of the Superman reboot, wished fans a Happy Superman Day by revealing on Twitter a picture of him hanging with the legendary comic artist Jim Lee. An eery-eerie celebration of the hero’s legacy accompanied the image. But of course, the internet had their contrasting opinions: a mix of positive and negative reactions.

“Spending time with @JimLee is always time well spent. Happy #SupermanDay!” his tweet read and thus the games began. From thanking him as a supposed “legend” to accusing him of trying to make this day more “about himself than for Superman.” Ouch! Another told him to “take a backseat,” a direct jab at Gunn for being too high-profile lately.
Then came the spice. Of course, there were some spicy comments: one reply in Spanish called Gunn a “pervo” (which, uh, really doesn’t need more of an explanation). One user bitter over Henry Cavill’s de facto firing grumbled, “If you’re going to hire an actor that looks like Henry Cavill, why not just hire Henry?” Meanwhile, a Brazilian fan poured her heart out about her struggles to get into the film industry, basically asking for goodwill from Gunn. (Spoiler alert: He didn’t.)
All had not lost in the thanking department. Some fans thanked Gunn for “reviving our hopes” for the Superman reboot, and then there were others asking when they could get the next trailer for the movie. Along came a totally random but undeniably delightful request for Scooby-Doo 3, because why not?
Gunn is one of those personalities who can effectively build a following while also causing controversy. He receives much acclaim, and whenever he engages with fans, he gets put under scrutiny all the more. From die-hard Snyder fans to casual observers who simply can’t stand one more social media cameo post by a director who assumes it promotes the movie, anything Gunn does gets called into question.

Anyway, what about this Superman film? Trailer remains elusive, but excitement (and backlash) is ever resounding. One thing is clear: Gunn’s posts never go without comment. This Superman Day was no exception.
